A question I get a lot is some version of “my site is fine, when is it worth spending more on it?”
The instinct behind the question is usually wrong, so let me correct it first, because it changes the whole decision.
You do not spend more because you “outgrew a cheap site.” What we ship is not a cheap, cut-corners site at any tier, and it is not a DIY builder or a one-off you never hear about again either. Every build we ship runs on the same UK/EU-based, GDPR-friendly infrastructure, and every build has one accountable point of contact on the job, professional and fully managed, and it is now accessible from £49 a month. The studio is founded by Jordan Gilbert, 20+ years building websites since 2006, with hand-built UK sites across a range of industries behind it. A simple presence site is not a worse-built site than an all-in local-domination one. The build quality, the hosting, the backups, the security posture, all of that is constant. Quality without the premium price.
What changes as you climb is one thing: how much visibility and growth work you want done for you. That is the only axis that matters. Not page count. Not “looking more professional.” Not some arbitrary revenue threshold. So the honest framing for every decision is a single sentence: how much of this do I want done for me, with one name attached to it? The rest of this post is the “you are ready for the next stage when…” test for each step.
How the pricing actually works
Before the stages, the money, because it is not a menu of packages you pick blind. We work audit-led, so the plan comes before the price:
- A free audit. Start at the free audit. We look at your site, your visibility and your competitors and tell you plainly where you actually stand. No cost, no obligation.
- A £300 Marketing and Automation Deep-Dive. If you want the full picture, the Marketing and Automation Deep-Dive is a proper consultation, a written audit and a fixed quote for the work. It is £300, and that £300 is credited in full against any build you go ahead with, so if you proceed it costs you nothing on top.
- A bespoke build and website management. From there we quote a build and ongoing website management, from £49 a month, quoted to your business and matched to the stage you are actually at, and services may vary. There is no lock-in and no minimum term: you can cancel any time, and new sign-ups are covered by the 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
That is the point of the audit: it works out which of the stages below you genuinely need, so the quote matches the work and not a rung you do not need. Now the stages.
Existing properly, what it actually buys
The first stage puts a real, professional website live and keeps it looked after:
- A proper, fast, mobile-friendly site that represents you well
- Hosting, SSL and domain housekeeping handled
- Daily encrypted off-site backups
- Security patching and uptime monitoring
- One accountable point of contact on the job
This is the stage for a business that needs to exist online properly and stop worrying about whether the site is up, secure, or about to expire. For a lot of UK small businesses, a clean site that does its job and is genuinely looked after is exactly and only what they need. Do not let anyone upsell you off it for the sake of it.
You are ready to convert when…
You stop wanting a site that exists and start wanting a site that brings enquiries in.
The tell is simple: people are landing on the site, but the phone is not ringing and the contact form is quiet. You want the site to actually convert the visitors it already gets, with clear calls to action, enquiry forms that work, the local search basics in place, and the small ongoing edits that keep it sharp. You are not yet running a full content campaign. You just want the visits you are getting to turn into customers.
That is the convert stage. If your honest answer to “is my site getting seen but not getting me work?” is yes, that is where you are.
Converting visitors, what it actually buys
Converting is existing properly plus the work that turns visitors into enquiries. Everything in the looked-after layer, and then:
- Conversion-focused pages and clear calls to action
- Enquiry and booking forms set up properly
- Local search basics (Google Business Profile, local listings, the right local terms)
- Ongoing small edits and improvements across the month
This is the stage for a business whose site is getting attention but needs to earn its keep. You are getting the conversion work done for you, on the same infrastructure, for a predictable monthly number. Plenty of businesses that want “my website should bring me steady enquiries” live here happily and never need to climb further.
You are ready to grow when…
You stop wanting your site to convert the traffic it has and start wanting it to go and get you more traffic and customers, with that engine run for you, not by you.
The tell here is different in kind, not just degree. At the convert stage you are asking “can you turn my visitors into enquiries?” At the grow stage you are asking “can you go and get me more visitors in the first place?”: a steady stream of articles built to rank, content velocity, conversion experiments, and a newsletter that actually goes out on schedule. The difference is between converting demand and creating demand. If you have decided you want to grow through your website rather than just present through it, and you do not have the time or the appetite to operate that machine yourself, that is the grow stage.
Growing, what it actually buys
Growing is an acquisition engine operated for you on a regular cadence. Across a typical month that means roughly:
- A steady stream of long-form articles built to rank
- Conversion-rate experiments on the pages that matter
- Newsletter broadcasts that actually go out
- A run of substantive changes and improvements to the site
This is the stage where the relationship stops being “keep my site converting” and becomes “go and grow this.” It still anchors well below a full agency retainer for comparable output, and it is still the same accountable contact on the job, but now the work is acquisition, not just conversion.
You are ready to dominate when…
You stop wanting steady growth and start wanting to own your local market.
The tell is ambition and appetite. Some businesses want a healthy, growing presence. Others want to own their local market: maximum content output, aggressive local SEO, the lot, with the budget and the cadence to match. When the question changes from “how do I grow?” to “how do I become the one everyone finds first?”, you are ready for the bigger build.
Dominating your market, what it actually buys
Dominating is going all-in on owning your local market. It is the highest-output stage: a heavier content cadence, the most aggressive local-search work, and a roadmap built around being the dominant name in your area rather than simply present in it. The build behind it is larger too, because an estate-scale presence needs more to stand it up, and the audit quotes for that scope up front.
This is not “growing, but more.” It is a different level of intent: you have decided that local market leadership is the goal, and you want the output and the focus to back that decision. If you are happy with steady growth, you almost certainly do not need it. If you want to be the name everyone in your area finds first, this is the stage that goes after it.
How to actually decide
Forget page counts and revenue thresholds. Ask yourself one question per stage:
- Exist → convert: Is my site getting seen but not getting me work? Conversion → the convert stage.
- Convert → grow: Do I want the site to go and get me more visitors and customers, with the engine run for me? Acquisition → the grow stage.
- Grow → dominate: Do I want to own my local market, not just grow steadily? Market leadership → the dominate stage.
If your answer to a stage’s question is still “no,” do not climb. There is no penalty for staying where you are, and every build already gives you the same infrastructure and the same accountable contact. The only thing you buy on the way up is more of the growth work done for you.
A named test: the Visibility Ladder
One question per stage, one verdict, call this the Visibility Ladder. Embed-friendly; attribution to UK Web Marketing appreciated, not required.
| You currently want… | The stage |
|---|---|
| A real, professional site live and properly looked after, with one accountable point of contact | Exist properly |
| All of that, plus the work that turns the visitors I already get into enquiries | Convert visitors |
| An acquisition engine (articles, CRO, newsletters) built and operated for me | Grow |
| To go all-in and own my local market, at the highest output and cadence | Dominate your local market |
Same UK/EU-based, GDPR-friendly infrastructure at every stage. Same accountable name on the job. What climbs is visibility and growth work, nothing else. The audit works out which of these you are at and quotes website management to match, from £49 a month, with no lock-in and services may vary.
A quick note on the money
There is no menu of packages to pick from. You start with a free Site Score audit, and if you want the full picture the £300 Marketing and Automation Deep-Dive gives you a consultation, a written audit and a fixed quote, with that £300 credited in full against any build you go ahead with. The build and the website management are then quoted to the stage you are actually at, from £49 a month, and services may vary. There is no lock-in, and you can cancel any time.
How to decide for real
Honest test: put into one sentence what you want your website to do for you over the next twelve months: exist properly, bring in enquiries, grow, or dominate your local market. Take that sentence to the free audit of your website, or get in touch directly, and we will tell you straight which stage earns its keep and which one you would be overpaying for.

Frequently asked questions
When should I invest more in my website?
Not because you outgrew a cheap site. Every build runs on the same UK and EU-based, GDPR-friendly infrastructure with one accountable point of contact, professional and fully managed, and accessible from £49 a month. You invest more only when you want more visibility and growth work done for you, with one name accountable for it.
What are the website stages?
Four: exist properly (a real, looked-after site), convert visitors (the work that turns visitors into enquiries), grow (an acquisition engine of articles, CRO and newsletters operated for you), and dominate your local market (the highest output, aggressive local SEO, aimed at being the name everyone finds first).
How do I know which stage I am at?
Ask one question per stage. Is my site getting seen but not getting me work? That is convert. Do I want the site to go and get me more visitors, run for me? That is grow. Do I want to own my local market, not just grow steadily? That is dominate. If your answer is still no, do not climb.
Do I pay more for a better-built website at higher tiers?
No. The build quality, hosting, backups and security posture are constant at every stage. A simple presence site is not built worse than an all-in local-domination one. The only axis that changes is how much visibility and growth work you want done for you.
How is the price worked out?
It is not a menu you pick blind. Start with a free audit, then an optional Marketing and Automation Deep-Dive gives a consultation, written audit and fixed quote, credited against any build. From there a bespoke build and website management from £49 a month, matched to the stage you are actually at, with no lock-in and services may vary.
